Why bigotry against otherkin people, multiple systems, and other groups pisses me off.
Quite honestly, otherkin identities make no sense to me. I have no idea how a person comes to realize they identify as a vampire, werewolf, or any other identity. I have no idea what it’s like to identify as any of those. Same goes for multiple systems (or multiples… I’ve been bitched out for using the wrong term but still can’t remember which is correct) — I still don’t understand the concept, and whenever I see people post about the others in their multiple system (again, forgive me if that’s the wrong term), I don’t understand how it works. There are plenty of identities that people keep posting about that I honestly can’t comprehend.
I’ve noticed many of the people I follow insulting these identities, calling them “special snowflakes,” and laughing about how they must be made-up. I’m calling out all of those people now because I think that’s ridiculous.
I identify as asexual. More often than not, I’ve been asked questions like, “How do you know asexuality exists?” or “Why are you using that word when you’re just mentally ill?” I think demisexual people are even more familiar with these questions than I am. Several times, sexual people have commented on my posts or posts by other asexuals to say that they totally support us. I’m going to assume most sexual people have a hard time grasping the notion that people can live life without feeling sexual attraction or without wanting to have sex. Despite their inability to comprehend how we must feel, they stand behind us. They don’t say we’re making shit up to be special, nor do they laugh at our identities and call us mentally ill.
Since most of the people I follow identify as asexual, and the people who have been insulting otherkins/multiple systems/etc have predominantly been asexual, I just want to ask all of you to step back for a second and realize that you’re already an example of what it’s like to identify as a group whose existence is constantly being challenged.
I don’t identify as otherkin or a part of a multiple system, and I won’t call myself an ally to either group since I’m way too uneducated; I’m just someone who believes that basic decency shouldn’t go to waste.
This post is just wonderful. Well, it’s not wonderful that people have been insulting otherkin and multiples, and it certainly isn’t cool that some people who have done that are asexual. I mean, I’m ace and I know how it feels like to be told that I’m making my sexual orientation up, that it doesn’t exist, or that I’m in denial of something. At the same time, I’m also plural, and I’ve been affected by the bashing of multiples and otherkin. So this post is awesome for addressing those things.
This is a really good post. Even if you don’t understand something, there’s no reason for you to mock it. When I talk about “ignorance,” I’m primarily discussing the willful ignorance and prejudiced behavior that causes people to discriminate and mock, rather than “I just don’t understand this.” “I don’t get it” is honest. “You’re all crazy and want to be special snowflakes” is confusion that’s being shunted into assholery because you’re so invested in trying to make yourself look better than others.
